15 Foods You Should Never Buy Again

Posted on 26 August 2010 by admin

With the rising costs of groceries, we’d all love to save a few bucks at the checkout line. Now you can easily slash your bill with some clever shopping moves and DIY recipes. Manufacturers would like to make you think you’re getting a good deal in exchange for convenience, but it’s really just eating away at your food budget. Don’t be fooled any longer. Cross these items off your list for good!

Food Never to Buy Again

1. “Gourmet” frozen vegetables.
Sure, you can buy an 8-ounce packet of peas in an herbed butter sauce, but why do so when you can make your own? Just cook the peas, add a pat of butter and sprinkle on some herbs that you already have on hand. The same thing goes for carrots with dill sauce and other gourmet veggies.

Food You Should Never Buy Again

2. Microwave sandwiches.
When you buy a pre-made sandwich, you’re really just paying for its elaborate packaging — plus a whole lot of salt, fat, and unnecessary additives. For the average cost of one of these babies ($2.50 to $3.00 per sandwich), you could make a bigger, better, and more nutritious version yourself.

Food Youi Should Never Buy Again

3. Premium frozen fruit bars.
At nearly $2 per bar, frozen “all fruit” or “fruit and juice” bars may not be rich in calories, but they are certainly rich in price. Make your own at home — and get the flavors you want. The only equipment you need is a blender, a plastic reusable ice-pop mold (on sale at discount stores for about 99 cents each), or small paper cups and pop sticks or wooden skewers.

To make four pops, just throw 2 cups cut-up fruit, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice into a blender. Cover and blend until smooth. You might wish to add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water so the final mix is a thick slush. Pour into 4-ounce pop molds or paper cups, insert sticks, and freeze until solid.

Foods You Should Never Buy Again

4. Boxed rice “entree” or side-dish mixes.
These consist basically of rice, salt, and spices — yet they’re priced way beyond the ingredients sold individually. Yes, there are a few flavorings included, but they’re probably ones you have in your pantry already. Buy a bag of rice, measure out what you need, add your own herbs and other seasonings, and cook the rice according to package directions.

Foods You Should Never Buy Again

5. Energy or protein bars.
These calorie-laden bars are usually stacked at the checkout counter because they depend on impulse buyers who grab them, thinking they are more wholesome than a candy bar. Unfortunately, they can have very high fat and sugar contents and are often as caloric as a regular candy bar. They’re also two to three times more expensive than a candy bar at $2 to $3 a bar. If you need a boost, a vitamin-rich piece of fruit, a yogurt, or a small handful of nuts is more satiating and less expensive!

Foods You Should Never Buy Again

6. Spice mixes.
Spice mixes like grill seasoning and rib rubs might seem like a good buy because they contain a lot of spices that you would have to buy individually. Well, check the label; we predict the first ingredient you will see on the package is salt, followed by the vague “herbs and spices.” Look in your own pantry, and you’ll probably be surprised to discover just how many herbs you already have on hand. Many cookbooks today include spice mix recipes, particularly grilling cookbooks. But the great thing about spice mixes is that you can improvise as much as you want. Make your own custom combos and save a fortune.

Food You Should Never Buy

7. Powdered iced tea mixes or prepared flavored iced tea.
Powdered and gourmet iced teas are really a rip-off! It’s much cheaper to make your own iced tea from actual (inexpensive) tea bags and keep a jug in the fridge. Plus, many mixes and preparations are loaded with high fructose corn syrup and other sugars, along with artificial flavors. So make your own, and get creative! To make 32 ounces of iced tea, it usually takes 8 bags of black tea or 10 bags of herbal, green, or white tea. Most tea-bag boxes have recipes, so just follow along. If you like your tea sweet but want to keep calories down, skip the sugar and add fruit juice instead.

Food You Should Never Buy

8. Bottled water.
Bottled water is a bad investment for so many reasons. It’s expensive compared to what’s coming out of the tap, its cost to the environment is high (it takes a lot of fossil fuel to produce and ship all those bottles), and it’s not even better for your health than the stuff running down your drain!

Even taking into account the cost of filters, water from home is still much cheaper than bottled water, which can run up to $1 to $3 a pop.

If you have well water and it really does not taste good (even with help from a filter), or if you have a baby at home who is bottle-fed and needs to drink safe water, buy jugs of distilled or “nursery” water at big discount stores. They usually cost between 79 cents and 99 cents for 1 gallon (as opposed to $1.50 for 8 ounces of “designer” water). And you can reuse the jugs to store homemade iced tea, flavored waters, or, when their tops are cut off, all sorts of household odds and ends.

9. Salad kits.
Washed and bagged greens can be a time-saver, but they can cost three times as much as buying the same amount of a head of lettuce. Even more expensive are “salad kits,” where you get some greens, a small bag of dressing, and a small bag of croutons. Skip these altogether. Make your own croutons by toasting cut-up stale bread you would otherwise toss, and try mixing your own salad dressing.

10. Individual servings of anything.
The recent trend to package small quantities into 100-calorie snack packs is a way for food-makers to get more money from unsuspecting consumers. The price “per unit” cost of these items is significantly more than if you had just bought one big box of cheese crackers or bag of chips. This is exactly what you should do. Buy the big box and then parcel out single servings and store them in small, reusable storage bags.

11. Trail mix.
We checked unit prices of those small bags of trail mix hanging in the candy aisle not that long ago and were shocked to find that they cost about $10 a pound! Make your own for much, much less with a 1-pound can of dry roasted peanuts, 1 cup of raisins, and a handful of almonds, dried fruit, and candy coated chocolate. The best part about making your own is that you only include the things you like! Keep the mixture in a plastic or glass container with a tight lid for up to 3 weeks.

12. “Snack” or “lunch” packs.
These “all-inclusive” food trays might seem reasonably priced (from $2.50 to $4.00), but you’re actually paying for the highly designed label, wrapper, and specially molded tray. They only contain a few crackers and small pieces of cheese and lunchmeat. The actual edible ingredients are worth just pennies and are filled with salt.

13. Gourmet ice cream.
It’s painful to watch someone actually pay $6 for a gallon of designer brand ice cream. Don’t bother. There’s usually at least one brand or other on sale, and you can easily dress up store brands with your own additives like chunky bits of chocolate or crushed cookie. If you do like the premium brands, wait for that 3-week sales cycle to kick in and stock up when your favorite flavor is half price.

14. Pre-formed meat patties.
Frozen burgers, beef or otherwise, are more expensive than buying the ground meat in bulk and making patties yourself. We timed it — it takes less than 10 seconds to form a flat circle and throw it on the grill! Also, there’s some evidence that pre-formed meat patties might contain more e. coli than regular ground meat. In fact, most of the recent beef recalls have involved pre-made frozen beef patties. Fresh is definitely better!

15. Tomato-based pasta sauces.
A jar of spaghetti sauce typically runs $2 to $6. The equivalent amount of canned tomatoes is often under $1. Our suggestion: Make your own sauces from canned crushed tomatoes or fresh tomatoes — particularly in the summer, when they are plentiful, tasty, and cheap. The easiest method is to put crushed tomatoes (canned or fresh) into a skillet, stir in some wine or wine vinegar, a little sugar, your favorite herbs, and whatever chopped vegetables you like in your sauce — peppers, onions, mushrooms, even carrots — and let simmer for an hour. Adjust the flavorings and serve. Even better: Coat fresh tomatoes and the top of a cooking sheet with olive oil and roast the tomatoes for 20 to 30 minutes at 425˚F before making your stovetop sauce. Delicioso!

“Bad” Foods You Should Be Eating

Posted on 20 August 2010 by admin

chocolate and butter

Some healthful foods have gotten bad reps they just can’t shake. Do you avoid peanut butter because you think it’s super-fattening? Have you banned egg yolk because you’re concerned about your heart health? Get the good truth about these and more “misunderstood” foods and why you should eat them—in moderation, of course.

5 “Bad Foods that you should be Eating”

Peanut Butter

The bad rep: Peanut butter is super-fattening.peanut butter

The good news: Peanut Butter is high in fat but that doesn’t mean it’s fattening. (Gaining or losing weight, and body fat, basically comes down to balancing calories.) That said, peanut butter is a concentrated source of calories, so you don’t want to go overboard. But you don’t need to eat tons to feel satisfied: just a tablespoon (90 calories) or two of peanut butter goes a long way. Plus, peanut butter provides protein and folate, a B vitamin important for the healthy development of new cells.

Eggs

eggsThe bad rep: A significant source of dietary cholesterol, egg yolks are off-limits for those concerned about heart health.

The good truth: Medical experts now emphasize that saturated fats and trans fats are bigger culprits in raising blood cholesterol than dietary cholesterol is. Plus, eggs are super-satisfying: in one study, people who ate a scrambled-egg-and-toast breakfast felt more satisfied, and ate less at lunch, than they did when they ate a bagel that had the same number of calories. Egg yolks contain lutein and zeaxanthin, compounds that research links with reduced risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.

Beefbeef

The bad rep: Beef is full of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol, so people who care about their hearts should avoid it.

The good truth: Lean cuts of beef are a low-fat source of protein and iron, a mineral essential for getting oxygen from the lungs to cells throughout the body—and one many women (of childbearing age) are deficient in. There are many lean cuts of steaks: filet mignon, sirloin, strip steak, flank steak. If you can’t remember the names, pick steaks that are deep red with a relatively small amount of marbling—a fancy name for fat—to find lean cuts.

Chocolate

The bad rep: Chocochocolateslate has lots of fat, lots of sugar—and it tastes amazing, so it must be bad for you.

The good news: Dark chocolate contains flavanols, antioxidants that seem to have a blood-thinning effect, which can benefit cardiovascular health. And, recently, researchers in Switzerland reported that eating dark chocolate (1.4 ounces of it) every day for two weeks reduced stress hormones, including cortisol, in highly stressed people. But be sure to account for the calories (1.4 ounces delivers 235)—or you may be stressed to see extra pounds creeping on.

Potatoes

The bad rep: Potatoes rank high on the glycemic index, which measures how quickly different foods raise your blood sugar. Foods with a high GI value tend to cause a higher spike in blood sugar—and in potatoedinsulin, the hormone that helps glucose get into cells—which can be a problem for some people, particularly those with diabetes.

The good news: Potatoes are a good source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. And unless you’re eating an absolutely plain potato all by itself, its GI value doesn’t matter. (It’s also worth noting that the glycemic index is an imperfect and controversial scale.) A high-GI potato becomes a low-GI meal if you simply add a little olive oil, because the added fat helps slow the absorption of the potato’s carbohydrates.

Botox @18? Is the anti-aging pressure insane?

Posted on 20 August 2010 by admin

5 Things to be Wary and Aware Of

botox at younger ageStephanie Dolgoff is the kind of gal you want on your first responder team. Love crisis or career slider—she’ll decode it like a woozy anti-spam CAPTCHA and clarify the writing on the wall with just the something you never thought of, while simultaneously making you pee in your pants. Now that the magazine editor, blogger, mother of twins, and (in full disclosure) friend, has written a cheekily wise and hilarious book, My Formerly Hot Life: Dispatches from the other side of young, which comes out today, Shine had to have a sit-down, and ask her:  What gives with all this the anti-aging mania?

For starters, “B” (that would be Botox) is apparently the new drug among teen girls. While Dolgoff’s birthday spank came at 40—the year she started feeling “formerly” hot—”Glee” singer, Charice Pempengco, is only 18, and makes no bones about getting Botox on her Cabbage Patch doll face. Her PR rep claims it was for jaw pain. Uh huh. So what about the Thermage, a skin tightening treatment, Charice also had?  In any case, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 12,000 teens, 18 and under, used Botox or Dysport in 2009—a pretty substantial rise from 8,194 the year before.

Can we stop the insanity? Dolgoff has some advice:

5 Things to be Wary and Aware Of

* The Botox Baby Boom. Here’s what Dolgoff says about that: ”Just be aware that t hicharice pempengcos i s based on a made up expectation, and you don’t have to accept it. Not that long ago, people whispered about having work done on their face. Then all of the sudden, it was out of the closet. Now it’s, ‘Big deal. I did it for my career.’ I’m not saying that you should lie or sneak around, and I definitely think it’s healthy to care about your appearance, but when having something injected into your face becomes the new ‘normal,’ it moves the bar. And they can just keep moving that bar. And moving it and moving it—until it’s impossible to be happy with how we are. And where does that leave us?”

* Anti Aging War Talk: Prompted by an ad on Facebook for a cream to combat “Murder Wrinkles,” Dolgoff went on a hunt and found that marketers tend to use violent language—”destroy,” “blast,” “torch,” “annihilate”—when describing anti-aging products. Subliminally it gets to you. She compares the tactic to extortion. “These people are trying to make money off of your fear of getting older,” she says. “The fear is you’ll never meet anyone who loves you, or you’ll wind up alone, or you never get hired. I use some of this stuff myself. But the truth is, the more we accept these messages unthinkingly, the more power they have.”

botox* The Old Shoe Shopping Trick.
Here’s a snippet from the book about Dolgoff’s husband: A few weeks ago he was nearly concussed by a (gold metallic Sven) clog when he tried to take something off the top shelf of my closet (he’ll only do that once). I gave him the Boo Boo Buddy we keep in the freezer for the girls, and he didn’t say a word. What could he say, really? That I had too many shoes? Shoe collecting, she maintains, is her strategy for denying death—the logic being that, because she can’t possibly wear them all out, they’ll continue their journey on earth long after her feet are comfortably up and resting six feet under. Not to mention, supercute shoes are doable at any age, and “they always fit, even if our other clothes, over time, do not.”

* Ban these labels: MILF and Cougar.  While some of Dolgoff’s ”formerly hot” friends see MILF (explained here), as a compliment, she does not. First of all, it sounds like “milk”—which makes her think of breastfeeding and “swollen, leaky boobs, and sore nipples,” not exactly a formula for sexual magic. ”I can’t get past the idea that MILF implies that attractive mothers are such a freaky fringe concept, they require a separate acronym,” she says. “Cougar” can also bite the dust in her opinion. That word, she says, “signifies that a not-young woman, who might actually want to have sex, is so uncivilized that she belongs in a National Geographic wildlife documentary.”
While we’re at it, let’s agree to dispose of the catty monikers that have trickled down to younger ladies. Like “puma” (20-somethings) and “hyena” (girl teens.) This name-calling is a form of cruelty to animals, both humans and felines. Where is PETA when you need them?
botox

* Also ban “for your age”
(as in “you’re beautiful for your age.”) This phrase, Dolgoff points out, assumes that you’ll automatically go downhill.  ”Sure looks matter, but you can be beautiful at any age. The older you get, the more important it is to project outward, and less important it is to show the world who you are by how you look.  But the idea that there’s only one way to be beautiful, or one way to be hot, is again, a message that’s been put before us. We don’t have to accept it.”

What do you think? Do you feel the pressure to look impossibly young? Are companies preying on our fears of aging? And what should we do about it?

What do your nails say about your health…

Posted on 19 August 2010 by admin

healthy nails

Our fingernails are very important indicators of our present state of health. Whenever we go to see a physician, he/she will look at our nails to determine if there are any indicators of poor health. It is very important to take good care of ourselves both internally and externally.

Healthy nails not only include your fingernails but your toenails as well.

Your nails are made up of keratin, also found in your hair and skin. The nail is composed of the nail plate, the most visible part of the nail. The nail fold surrounds the nail on all three sides. The nail bed is the nail beneath the skin bed. The cuticle overlaps the nail plate at the base of the nail and protect the new nail as it emerges from the nail bed.It takes about 4-6 months for your fingernail to grow back. Healthy nails are smooth and uniform in color. There is no discoloration and no ridges or grooves

We know what healthy nails look like but what do unhealthy nails look like and what do they indicate?

Brittleness:

If your hands are in and out of hot water all day, they can become brittle. This is also an indication of poor health. It can be an indicator ofthyroid disease, lack of vitamin A, C, B6, calcium, iron and niacin.

Anemia
Menopause / hormonal imbalance
Thyroid problems
Impaired kidney function or Liver Disease
Circulation problems
Infection
Dietary Deficiencies: Vitamin C, calcium, folic acid, protein, iron and fat are needed to build strong healthy nails
Stress and anxiety can also slow nail growth and lead to weak or brittle nails.
Hang nails:
Can be a sign of a lack of protein, folic acid, or vitamin C.
Treatment for Brittle Nails:
A balanced diet rich in the nutrients needed for healthy nails (please refer to above “dietary deficiencies” will help grow strong nails.
Almonds contain fatty acids that are shown to improve nail growth. Eating as few as 6 almonds a day can produce visible results
If stress is the cause, stress reduction techniques such as yoga or meditation can help
Menopause: Techniques for stress reduction, such as yoga or meditation, combined with regular exercise and an improved diet, can be a great natural menopause treatment. Diet is also important. Studies have shown that diets rich in foods that promote estrogen levels (such as soy, apples, alfalfa, cherries, potatoes, rice, wheat and yams) are great menopause treatments.

Spoon shaped nails:

which the nails are turning upwards around the edges to form a spoon is an indicator or thyroid disease, iron deficiency and anemia.

Clubbing:

Is when he nail grows downward and starts to curve around the finger. It may indicate chronic lung diseaselung cancer, and congenital heart disease.

Ridges:

Are lines going across the nail and may be caused by kidney failure, trauma, or old age.

Pitting:

Is when there are white spots on your nails. This may be caused by psoriasis or eczema.

Separation:

Is when the nail becomes loose and can come off. It is sometimes caused by fungal infection, anemia, pregnancy, and trauma.

White nails:

With pink near the tip can indicate cirrhosis of the liver; if the nail is completely white, it can indicate kidney disorder or liver disorder.

Yellow nails:

Can mean that you are diabetic or you may have a respiratory disorder.

Dark nails:

Which will be flat or this is a B12 deficiency.

If your nail beds are deep blue, it could be an indicator of emphysema or pulmonary obstruction.

Abnormally wide, square nails may indicate a hormonal disorder.

If you noticed any of the above issues about your nails, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Migraine is the term used to describe a severe pain in the head. Migraine is caused by the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve, which release a substance inducing inflammation and also send messages to pain receptors in the meninges.

Migraine occurs most often in women, due to fluctuations in the level of the hormone estrogen, that’s the reason why women get migraines around the time of menstruation, when estrogen levels are low.

During pregnancy is also common to suffer migraines, specially during early pregnancy. The cause may be hormonal, but the headache can be due to excess tension too.

The Fight Against Dry, Irritated Eyes

Posted on 11 August 2010 by admin

irritated eyesSummertime can cause a host of eye issues, from melting makeup to dry, irritated peepers. Lack of sleep and allergies only add to the mix, leaving you with puffy, watery eyes that cause eye makeup to run. Luckily, we’ve got some great treatments and ways to for tired, irritated eyes, plus makeup tips to keep you looking fresh.

Eat Like a Nutritionist

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds) protects against dry eyes, in addition to giving you a healthy glow. It’s also important to eat lots of leafy greens and vitamin C fruits as well as superpower foods rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, like eggs and carrots, says Dr. Robert Mirsky, an ophthalmologist in New Jersey. Have insomnia or other ailments? There are goods to help those too!

Water-Resistant Mascara mascara
Oily skin and allergy-prone eyes spell smudges, making water-resistant mascaras a summer must. Even better, they hold curl longer. We tested mascaras on real women  — check out the only eight you’ll ever need to buy.

Choose the Right Eye Cream
Since the skin around the eyes is especially thin and sensitive, you’ll want to try an eye cream that contains calming, hydrating ingredients like chamomile, elderflower, oat extract, and green tea. Try Clinique All About Eyes Rich, $28.50. Also beware: allergies can make the eye area puffy. Do this to deflate them.

Nonslip Eye Shadows
Even your lids aren’t immune to summer sweating. To prevent creasing, opt for a matte or mineral eye shadow that will help control oil on your lids. This easy step will also help.

water

Drink More Water (and Less Caffeine)
It’s always a good idea to up your water intake, especially if your eyes are feeling Sahara-like. And while you’re at it, keep your caffeine consumption under 300 milligrams per day (one cup of coffee has about 100 milligrams), says registered dietician Lisa Drayer, author of The Beauty Diet, since the mild diuretic effect of caffeine can leave you dehydrated.

Easy Eyes
Dark, smoky eyes may be super-sexy, but black kohl pencils will likely melt and run in the heat (try this to make your eyeliner last). Instead, use more natural shades like golds and browns to play up your eyes. “My absolute favorite eye shadow for the summer is Go The Distance Double Color Eyeshadow by Mally in Marathon Brown,” L.A.-based makeup artist and brow/lash expert Juliana Landis says. “The colors complement every complexion, and it has two cream-based shadows in coppery gold colors and two powder shadows in browns. I recently wore these on my Mexican vacation, where I swam and sunbathed, and my eyes looked glam all day!”removing make up

Always Remove Your Eye Makeup
Once in awhile we all crash without washing our faces, but it’s really important to at least take off your eye makeup. “This is the easiest way to prevent eye irritation,” says Dr. Mirsky. If you’re really tired, keep unscented baby wipes next to your bed so you can swipe off your mascara and liner while literally lying down.

Feel Better Instantly with These Foods

Posted on 11 August 2010 by admin

A handful of walnuts, a cup of oatmeal, a few sips of tea . . . what do all of these things have in common? They may help turn you into Susie Sunshine.

To feel better through food, you need to seek out nutrients known for boosting the production of feel-good brain chemicals and fighting off the effects of stress in the body. And walnuts, oatmeal, and tea fit the bill, according to Roberta Lee, MD, author of The SuperStress Solution.

Good-Mood Comfort Food
Here’s why Lee feels these three options are so outrageously good for your disposition:

cup of oats

Oatmeal: This happy grain is rich in tryptophan, a building block for the feel-good chemical serotonin. And you won’t feel hungry and grouchy an hour later, thanks to the filling fiber.

mint iced tea

Tea: A spot of tea may give you just the mood and performance boost you crave, thanks to the caffeine. Plus, research links tea drinking to lower rates of depression. And studies show that the very act of preparing tea may soothe nerves. Make your mouth happy with this take on iced tea: Green Jasmine-Mint Iced Tea with Lemon.

a handfull of walnuts

Walnuts: These nuts are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids — a type of fat that your nerve cells and brain chemicals love. They need it to function. Research shows that omega-3s may also help ward off depression.

5 Simple Tricks to Looking Younger

Posted on 11 August 2010 by admin

WANT TO LOOK YOUNGER? HERE ARE 5 SIMPLE TRICKS!

looking younger

Age can be so annoying. If birthdays were recyclable, we’d all be environmentalists. But is it worth going under the knife to fake away a few years? (The recent uptick in celebs on plastic-surgery benders is a little unnerving.) Don’t worry: These six switches will make you look younger without a lot of drama.

Skin

Instead of: Soap and water
Try: Creams and lotions
applying lotion and cream on skinScrubbing your face actually dries and ages the skin. The new regimen? Cleanse gently, moisturize daily, swear by SPF 30, and think about an anti-aging cream.”Over-the-counter products are best for people in their 20s and 30s,” says Dale Isaacson, MD, associate clinical professor in the department of dermatology and medicine at George Washington Medical Center. “Once you get into your 40s, you probably need something stronger.” Among the ingredients used to reduce fine lines and restore texture, so far vitamins C and A seem to stand out. In drugstore creams, look for L-ascorbic acid and retinol (the forms of vitamins C and A you want). At the prescription level, retinoids (like Retin A) have the most science behind them. Isaacson also uses formulations with high concentrations of vitamin C, growth hormones, and coffeeberry.

Makeup

Instead of: Cover and hide
Try: Let there be light
Glopping concealer under your eyes (naturally, our first impulse) is the worst thapplying concealering you can do, says Hollywood makeup artist Kerry Herta—it just enhances the crinkles. To hide the bags, dab a light-reflecting coverup, and don’t use powder unless it’s loose and finely milled. “If you’ve never curled your lashes, now is the time to start,” Herta says. “It will give the illusion of a more open eye,”—as will building the mascara at the center of the lash. As for the rest of the face, “the compact has to go,” she says. “Replace it with a liquid foundation.”  And brash lipstick can backfire; you’ll look younger with soft colors and a little gloss on top. Or, if you just want a little oomph, try a tinted moisturizer. “The whole idea is to keep a luminosity to the skin rather than to mattify it,” Herta says. “The look of youth is radiance.”

Hairgray hair

Instead of: Dyeing darker
Try: A touch of shine
Yes, even if you’re grey. In fact, that four-letter color can look edgy on the right person, especially with a few blond highlights, says Terrence Michael Renk, a stylist at J Beverly HIlls who works in TV and film. ”More important than dyeing,” he says, “is the texture: Young hair is shiny, and that gets lost when we age.” Renk loves to glisten things up with glazes—clear or in warm demi-colors. Also the cut and a few well-placed highlights can counter facial sagging, he says. “And have some fun. One of the biggest trends right now is the 70s influence. There is nothing wrong with a 50-year-old woman putting a braid on one side of her head. “

Clothes

Instead of: The “outfit”
Try: It’s all about the right pieces
“If you’re going to an event this summer, don’t wear black pants, a dressyhow to look younger top, and a cardigan—it’s very old lady-ish,” says Charla Krupp, author of How Not to Look Old. Krupp’s other “don’ts” include little suits and matchy-matchy getups. You’ll look chic and younger, she says, in white pants and high heels, or a simple dress. And then, ladies, pile on the wrist candy—”a lot of bangles, a big thick watch, tons of teeny elasticized bracelets.” Eyewear can make a big difference, too, she says. “Check out Annette Bening’s glasses in The Kids Are All Right.  (take a look.) Also, shake up the pedicure. “Red is so boring. Even wine, Wicked, and burgundies are getting stale. Put lavender on your toes. Blue, black…grey is really in.” Whatever you do, just don’t come off like you’re trying too hard—which means, ta-ta, whirly skirts and mini bubble dresses. “Those look good if you’re 12.”

The Body

Instead of: Walking
Try: Walking backward
Don’t get us wrong: Any exercise is good exercise. But moving nimbly is a subtle indicator of being young. “The key is motor plasticity,” says Michael Gonzalez-Wallace, creator of the Super Body, Super Brain program. “You need to continue to train the brain circuits responsible for movement.” That means, instead of just walking or jogging, which you do automatically, you should periodically throw in a balance or coordination challenge: Walk backward, play basketball, take a ballet class, stand on one foot with your eyes closed. “Try one new activity a week,” Gonzalez-Wallace suggests. “You just need a few minutes.”

Whatever you do, remember the bigger picture, says Stephanie Dolgoff, whose book, My Formerly Hot Life, comes out this month. “Dying your hair or filling in a frown line can definitely give you a little boost. But don’t expect looking younger to make you happy. I saw a saying on a card once that said ‘A smile is an instant facelift.’  I rolled my eyes at the time, but it’s true. When you laugh, you can’t see the wrinkles.”
